The Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) and AVSC International have conducted a global study investigating the availability and use of misoprostol for obstetrical and gynecologic purposes. A literature review, world-wide survey of key providers' experience, and survey of misoprostol's availability around the world provide a global context, while in-depth, qualitative assessments in four countries provides insights into the information needs and service delivery implications of misoprostol use. The research highlights the different ways misoprostol is used in gynecologic and obstetrical services, clients' experiences obtaining and using misoprostol to terminate pregnancy, providers' experience treating patients who have used the drug, and the information/service delivery needs associated with this experience. This presentation will describe research findings and recommendations for program activities, particularly for postabortion care where misoprostol use is common.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this report about this exploratory research participants will be able to: >Discuss where misoprostol is available and how it is used >Generate further research questions that will build on the growing international body of knowledge about this widely utilized medication.
