Sexual violence is an important issue because it affects individuals of all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic status. Studies have confirmed that violence, especially domestic violence, may occur to females regardless of her social, economic or educational level (Smikle, et. al, 1996). Previous studies have indicated that females aged 18-24 years are more likely to experience sexual violence than females in any other age group. The purpose of this research is to investigate the prevalence of sexual violence and examine its psychosocial effects among individuals 18-24 years of age. 500 individuals aged 18-24 years in Leon County, Florida completed a survey to determine the prevalence of sexual violence among this population. One-on-one interviews to examine the psychosocial effects of sexual violence were conducted with African American females aged 18-24 who have experienced sexual violence. Results revealed that a high proportion of survey respondents know someone who has experienced sexual violence. In addition, sexual violence was most prevalent among African American females aged 18-24. Additional results regarding the psychosocial effects of sexual violence will be presented. This study has provided a better understanding of sexual violence and its psychosocial effects among individuals in this age group. Future study is needed to determine the reason for the high prevalence of sexual violence among African American females aged 18-24. Interventions to decrease the prevalence of sexual violence among this particular population are also needed.
