The purpose of the Mobile Migrant Health Project was to provide data necessary for determining the healthcare needs of migrant farm workers in a rural Appalachian community. Approximately 200 migrant workers, 98% Hispanic, participated in 7 mobile clinics - a collaborative project between farm owners, Clemson University faculty and students, the South Carolina Migrant Health Program, area health services and community volunteers. The project identified many barriers facing both migrant farm workers as well as their employers in addressing basic healthcare for workers and their families. This valuable information guided the planning process for a series on mobile health clinics rotating among area farms in a fifty-mile radius in order to provide basic health care to migrant farm workers and their families. The project coordinators identified key players in the region, conducted training sessions discussing identified barriers to healthcare and cultural aspects unique to providing health services to a primarily Hispanic population. Project coordinators utilized a cultural model that builds on the strengths within the community and considers the influence of naturally existing sources of social and community support.
