The National System of Child Fatality Review includes teams in all states augmented by a Canadian National System and teams in Australia. Core membership includes health/public health, criminal justice, and social services. Review involves multiple agencies sharing information. Most teams with time include a data system with capacity for aggregate analysis of data for rates and trends, and that provides direction for case management and prevention programs. These teams are connected by the Los Angeles County ICAN National Center for Child Fatality Review through the Internet. Products include improved collaboration and cooperation among agencies represented on the teams, improved death investigation, local reports and a national data system with infant data by state by year matching vital statistics homicide, FBI-UCR-SHR homicide, and data on fatal child abuse/neglect. This system met the objective for 2000 7.13 and expects to meet objective 15-6 for 2010 with review of more than 70% of all child injury deaths under age 15. Infants are the primary group for all child deaths and the primary group for fatal child abuse. Future data will include infant death and birth certificate match by teams. Pevention programs have a primary focus on infants young toddlers and high risk pregnancies. See ican-ncfr.org
