Cost effective ways for learning, technical assistance and sharing program models among youth programs is a challenge. Adolescent programs in Latin America/Caribbean have varying strengths and weaknesses; often a need in one can be addressed through the experience of another. South-to-South Collaboration includes the participation of IPPF/WHR affiliate youth programs involving staff and youth in exchange visits across the region.
Representatives from youth programs in Profamilia/Colombia and ASHONPLAFA/Honduras traveled to Profamilia/Dominican Republic. The visit allowed personnel to observe different approaches to working with youth, and allowed youth to share work strategies on peer education, recruitment, and participant retention.
Because of the South-to-South Collaboration, Colombia adapted the DR peer educator training manual to meet their local needs. Materials used to launch the youth programs of Colombia and DR were shared with Honduras, whose youth program is new. DR is strong in community outreach/involvement, while Colombia is successful in service delivery to young people. The exchange visits allowed each of the affiliates to strengthen areas in need of support, while sharing their experiences.
South-to-South Collaboration as a form of technical assistance has advantages including the recognition of expertise in the region; cost effectiveness; and the formation of a regional network of colleagues and peers. The Collaboration focused on activities in the region, and used the strength and participation from different FPAs to strengthen those activities. The Collaboration can be replicated on local, regional, and international levels, and can be in relation to a variety of sexual and reproductive health issues.
Learning Objectives: Participants will learn the value of addressing the needs of one youth program through the experience of another youth program, rather than using technical assistance from the regional office.
