As the global burden of occupational and environmental disease and injury continues to grow, the demand for well-trained scientists and professionals has reached a critical point. In order to successfully deal with these challenges in occupational and environmental health and safety, the Fogarty International Center (FIC) at the NIH, has funded 13 research training centers in occupational and environmental health since 1995, each for a period of five years. The purpose of these research training centers is to prepare professionals from around the globe to deal effectively with the occupational and environmental consequences of development. Focused in developing regions of the world, the FIC grantees provide long term degree training in the US, short term training in the US and abroad, as well as continuing education and worker training in the host country. Collaborative relationships with host country agencies, public and private, are a critical link to the success of these training efforts. As the first five-year cycle comes to a close and these programs are evaluated, the sustainability of these training programs is a fundamental concern. The issues impacting the sustainability of these training efforts are varied and as trainees prepare to return to their home country they are faced with many political, economic and professional challenges. This session will present a review of the different types of training programs to date and discussion of the impact and sustainability of these efforts around the globe. Program directors, international trainees and funding agency representatives will provide a variety of perspectives | ||||
