The Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010) objectives on geriatric care emphasize the importance of health promotion and prevention activities in caring for this growing population. Educating students on the topics of health promotion and prevention should therefore be an integral part of healthcare training in geriatrics. This presentation will highlight one college’s experience in making the shift away from a disease/pathology focus and towards health promotion in their geriatrics coursework. A two-pronged approach has been used in which chiropractic students are trained in (HP 2010) objectives in required geriatrics coursework, and chiropractic clinicians may receive reinforcement of these concepts in a newly developed geriatrics continuing education certification program. A summary and examples of health promotion materials included in this geriatrics certification program will be given. This educational program development project represents a conscious and comprehensive effort to encourage implementation of the HP 2010 objectives into chiropractic education at one school. The challenges encountered in implementing this effort will also be presented.
