Public libraries are located in every neighborhood and provide low threshold and free access to information about a variety of topics. The Coordinator of the Community Health Nursing Program and the Director of the CHOICES program of the New York Public Library have formed a partnership which fosters the sharing of expertise and resources. The CHOICES program provides the public with access to reliable and up-to-date health infromation on a variety of topics through the internet and print media. The nursing faculty provides expert knowledge about community nursing and health-related issues and resources. A legal contract has been signed between the School and the Library and one registered nurse student will complete his clinical practicum at the Library in Spring, 2000. Future plans include ongoing clinical placements for both RN undergraduate and community health nursing graduate students. Their activities would include working with the CHOICES librarians in follow-up on health information sent to the home-bound library patron, provision of health information lectures, and identification of clinical material for care-givers. This partnership benefits the library, the School of Nursing, consumers, and nursing students.
