Outcome assessement and management have become essential features in the delivery of quality health care. Outcome assessment and building clinical research capacity have been identified and recommended as priority areas for chiropractic research, chiropractic colleges and the profession.
This presentation describes a multi-site clinical science pilot study designed with two objectives. One, develop and implement a methodology to conduct a multi-site clinical research trial involving each of the colleges three off campus health centers. Two, perform responsiveness testing on two HRQL instruments, the Revised Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (RODQ) and the Bournemouth Questionnaire (BQ), in order to identify one instrument for use in day to day clinical practice and as an outcome measure for future studies.
Both instruments are self-administered condition specific measures for low back pain patients. The RODQ has established pyschometric qualities. The BQ is a new instrument. It is shorter and may be easier to complete compared to the RODQ, and is time specific (one week). However it is only in its initial phases of psychometric development.
We describe the infrastructure created to perform the project; The off campus research associate, the onsite student research assistants, abstraction instruments, quality control mechanisms. We describe specific responsiveness testing of the RODQ and BQ by analysis of change scores, patient and provider global ratings of change, and ROC plots. Recommendations for modification and use of the infrastructure, research capacity, as well as future outcome and appropriate assessment project are offered.
Learning Objectives: Present description and discussion of experiences during this pilot study to develop research capacity and perform a basic outcome research project. To review methodological and administrative recommendations for futre projects
