Methodology: Qualitative research tools applied in participatory learning and action (PLA) were used. These included, group discussions, ranking and scoring, in-depth interviews and a participatory census of sexual behavior of project participants. Program beneficiaries and peer educators participated in 10 group discussions in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, and Western Cape in October, 1999. Using a structured guide, discussions were held separately for males and females’ beneficiaries and peer educators. 41 female and 32 male beneficiaries, and 25 female and 12 male peer educators participated in group discussions. Participants ranged in age from 13 to 28 years old. Each group was composed of 8-12 participants. Focus group discussions on youth health problems, access to condoms, community/parental involvement and causes of and solutions to high-risk health behavior by young people were conducted with opinion leaders.
Results: The ARH program succeeded in training peer educators and volunteers who have been working to change youth reproductive health KAPB. Key findings of the evaluation were identified in the area of (1) program design, implementation, and monitoring, (2) impact of the program on youth, parents, community, and (3) the organizational capacity of the YMCA to carry out a national ARH program.
