Previous research has shown that male college athletes exhibit spit tobacco (ST) use rates in excess of the general population. Athletes may also use ST in ways that are unique to their individual sports. The purpose of this study was to assess the current prevalence of and trends in "regular" and daily ST use among NCAA athletes and to examine and compare the patterns of ST use for athletes in four National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sanctioned sports. Results of a four-year, repeat measure survey of 5000 athletes at 56 randomly selected NCAA institutions are presented and suggestions for tailoring ST educational and cessation programming for sports teams are provided.
Learning Objectives: 1. Describe prevalence of spit tobacco use among male college athletes 2. Discuss trends in use by sport 3. Compare patterns of use for members of selected athletic teams 4. Suggest targeted ST educational programs
