In Stamford, Connecticut, Stamford Health System--a nonprofit organization--and St. Vincent's Medical Center recently completed an affiliation. This case study presentation will cover the motivating factors, structure, process and outcomes of the affiliation. Facilities and programmatic planning and CON approval for the reconfiguration of both campuses will be discussed. As part of the planning, the two organizations evaluated a variety of options for women's services to respect the interests of all parties. The CT Permanent Commission on the status of Women closely monitored the affiliation as Stamford negotiated the final "change in membership" and acquisition of property through St. Vincent's Medical Center on behalf of the Diocese of Bridgeport. The presentation will cover the options evaluated and the final resolution within the context of another project in the state which failed due to the controversy regarding the reproductive rights issue. The context of that recent history helped the parties to avoid making the same mistakes and to arrive at a creative compromise that ensured the completion of the acquisition and maintaining women's access to care.
