Substance abuse and HIV/AIDS are the major cause of disability and death in urban America, as well as in many other parts of the world. Since race, ethnicity and culture play major roles in accessing the population as most risk, health must be addressed in ways that are culturally competent. This session will touch on special programs in inner city Washington, DC to address training of health care professionals in meeting the challenges of caring for marginalized, often disadvantaged, substance abusing HIV-positive persons.
Learning Objectives: 1. Understand the rational for competency in organizing and delivering health care. 2. Acquire specific understanding of special needs of affected communities. 3. Learn about useful approaches to culturally competent health care
