Over the past twenty years, the U.S. government has carried out an enormous and largely unknown global campaign to protect pharmaceutical companies. This has included extensive efforts to pressure our trading partners to raise prices for pharmaceutical drugs. Often, U.S. trade officials ask countries to adopt policies that are contrary to U.S. domestic law, and that far exceed obligations under U.S. trade agreements. These policies present ethical dilemmas, as the world faces a crisis in access to essential medicines.
