In Bergville, South Africa, an USAID funded child survival project has succeeded both in achieving disease-specific reduction targets for diseases preventable by immunization, ARI, and diarrhea, and also in strengthening the managment capacity of the District Health Team. Evaluation has documented strengthened capacity in setting objectives, choosing indicators, carrying out surveys, quality assurance and monitoring. Strengthened management is expected to increase probability that benefits will be sustained beyond the period of project funding.
