As part of it's school health initiative, the American Cancer Society has initiated a special institute designed to assist individuals within school districts, develop programs to train school health coordinators. The first Institute was conducted in the summer of 1999 and will continue for a five year period. In this presentation, an overview of the philosophy, goals, and processes of the institute, and the implications from the standpoint of local school districts and higher education will be presented. Particular emphasis will be placed on how local school districts and higher education programs can work together to make coordinated school health programs become a reality.
