CHIS is a large, new population-based survey designed to provide public health researchers, policy analysts, and advocates with information required to assess health needs and the effects of public policies on California’s diverse population. It will permit identification of disparities in health needs and access to care for population groups for which data has been severely lacking. A broad array of national, state, and local public health experts and ethnic and racial minority constituencies has been involved in the planning and design of CHIS. Multiple funders have participated in supporting and designing CHIS, including national agencies (the National Cancer Institute, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and California agencies (e.g., the California Department of Health Services and the California Children and Families Commission).
