The results of a Boston University study on acupuncture detox will be discussed. After taking into account differences in baseline characteristics (using a variety of adjustment approaches), clients initially admitted to acupuncture had somewhat lower 6-month readmission rates for detoxification compared to clients initially admitted to residential detox. Three approaches for adjustment of this type of selection bias are illustrated: 1) adjustment through the use of multivariate models (the standard approach); 2) stratification; and 3) subsampling of cases based on the propensity score to identify comparable groups using each modality.
