Project SEARCH (Strategies for Empowering All Regarding Community Health) began as a response from a private health care organization for technical assistance to an existing publicly run Community Health Workers Program in a large urban city. Focus group data from the community health workers in that program revealed critical areas for change. The resulting model for change led to a 2-year pilot project that demonstrated valuable learnings about the strengths and weaknesses of public private collaborations in addressing urban health issues via community health advocacy for personal health behavior change. Specifically, outcomes and information related to community health advisor recruitment, curriculum development and training, implementation and evaluation are examined to provide recommendations for future replication.
