Choose to Move - 1999 Focus Group Evaluations: D. Matson Koffman, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, T. Bazzarre, American Heart Association, L Mosca, University of Michigan, R Redberg, University of California, USA
Rationale: Launched in 1998 as part of the American Heart Association’s National Women's Heart Disease and Stroke Campaign, the Choose To Move (CTM) 1999 physical activity program was designed for women ages 25 and older.
Objectives: To qualitatively examine the 12-week CTM 1999 program.
Methods: Four focus groups were conducted with a sample of women who registered for the CTM 1999 program. Two groups were with women who registered for the program and returned no more than two program participation cards, and two groups were with women who returned more than three. Each group lasted two hours and was audio- and video-taped for analysis.
Results: Overall impressions of the CTM program were positive for the following reasons: information was useful, simple and inspirational, it was free, it made one accountable, it fit with one’s lifestyle, the rewards were motivating, it provided reminders and reinforcement, the pace was doable, and 12 weeks was the right program length. Further information will be provided at the conference.
Conclusions/Significance: Based on a sample of program participants, Choose to Move seems to be an acceptable and desirable program to assist women with ways to improve their physical activity and dietary behaviors, and to lower their risk for cardiovascular disease. Suggestions will be used in designing the CTM 2000 program.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the Choose to Move 1999 program. 2. Identify the focus group methods for evaluating the Choose to Move 1999 program. 3. List some of the results and recommendations from the Choose to Move 1999 focus groups
