In March, 2000, the author was part of a delegation from the United States to attend the Women Challenging Violence Conference at the University of Central America in Managua, Nicargua. The delegation was sponsored by the Committee on Human Rights in the Americas and the Nicaragua Network. In addition to the conference, delegates met with numerous Nicaraguan groups working to combat violence against women and children, including Puntos de Encuentro and La Red de Mujeres Contra la Violencia, Grupo de Hombres Contra la Violencia, the Women’s Office of the Police Department, and local public health activists working on violence against women issues. Violence will be discussed in terms of gender, economic status, the impact of war on women and children, and political violence. After attending this session, participants should be familiar with the status of violence against women in Nicaragua, have an understanding of what local groups are doing to combat violence as a public health problem, and be able to discuss the challenge of addressing violence against women in a country that has experienced serious natural disasters (the 1972 earthquake and Hurricane Mitch) and political upheaval..
Learning Objectives: Participants will learn about groups in Nicaragua that are working at the grassroots, organizational and institutional levels to address the violence against women
Keywords: Violence Prevention, International Public Health
