Since 1996, the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided technical assistance on four surveys in Eastern Europe (Moldova,1997; Russia, 1999; Romania, 1999; Georgia, 1999) and four surveys in Latin America (Paraguay, 1996; Puerto Rico, 1996; Paraguay, 1998; Ecuador, 1999) that collected population-based data on violence against women aged 15-49 years. Findings from these surveys offer some of the first country-specific data on prevalence of violence against women, including family history of abuse, intimate partner violence, and sexual violence. Moreover, the surveys offer a unique opportunity to understand more about the possible links between violence against women and reproductive health issues such as contraception, fertility, and HIV status. Authors of this session will present violence data by country, including analyses by respondent characteristics and other covariates. Authors will also discuss lessons learned in these initial efforts to collect population-based violence data. Session attendees will gain a greater understanding of: 1) violence against women in the countries included in the analysis; and 2) technical and ethical issues related to collecting population-based violence data in cross-sectional surveys.
