Many of the $36 billion domestic nutrition assistance programs administered by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) include a nutrition education component. In response to a congressional request, FNS prepared a report to Congress describing a comprehensive, integrated approach to nutrition education for the FNS nutrition assistance programs. An analysis of funding for nutrition education revealed significant gaps and large per participant differences across the major programs. This session will review the findings and the opportunities for the future described in the report, which was submitted to Congress in January 2000.
Learning Objectives: Attendees will be able to convey information on the relative funding levels for the major domestic nutrition assistance programs, and discuss the structure of USDA/FNS funded nutrition education
