Objective: To provide education and training to medical students to improve their knowledge of public health issues, including methods for perinatal HIV transmission reduction.
Background: Family Advocacy, Care and Education Services of Children's Hospital in New Orleans provides education and training to clinical care providers and their patients regarding perinatal HIV transmission reduction. In 1997, FACES surveyed local obstetricians regarding perinatal HIV transmission. Results indicated while 79% of the respondents offered HIV pre-test counseling, 57% were not concerned with the risks associated with AZT during pregnancy. FACES continues to provide training to medical providers, and in 1999 expanded the scope of training to reach medical students.
Methods: Concepts in public health target medical students through a three-tier approach: 1) through informative and professionally designed print media, 2) information about the concept is e-mailed to all students, 3) public health presentations are scheduled with medical students' Special Interest Groups. The concepts cover a range of topics including HIV related issues. The poster design is created by a local advertising agency that specializes in social marketing.
Results: In 1999, the training model was developed, which included an evaluation component. During the pilot year two concept posters were displayed in the Tulane University Medical School and four Special Interest Groups received training on public health issues including HIV counseling techniques for the reduction of perinatal HIV transmission. Currently, the project is expanding to include additional concept posters, presentations, and evaluation.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to describe methods to train medical students about public health topics, including methods for perinatal HIV transmission reduction
